Linda's Notes:it was WONDERFUL! I left the husks on as I always do and soaked them a bit. Then slathered with the mayo, cheese and lime....YUM is all I can say. It was a nice light taste and a great variation to serving corn. (We had some BLTs and potato salad and was stuffed to our own ears! lol) This definitely goes in the keeper file~as we still have a few more weeks of corn to pick from the garden!

Day 16 - Declutter!

Well, first of all I am feeling better today. Sigh! What a decent night's sleep and a weekend can do! Today I am working some in the kitchen. Here is my tea/coffee cupboard all straightened up. The other pic is of the stuff that I threw out from this cupboard. I like loose tea so eventually as I add containers, all my loose tea will be in containers and no longer in the bags that I get at the tea store. I labeled the tea so that I knew which kind was in each container. I took all the hot cocoa packets out of the box and put into a container. I have a few tea bags left so I put them in a narrow container in front. The glasses were Arbys freebies a few years ago. I like them but never use them - to Goodwill!

Fave Five for Friday

What are your fave five from this week?
Decluttering Challenge!!

I haven't given up, my battery went dead in the camera!!! When I get a new one (today) I will load up a couple of pics. :)
This has been a very strange week. Got a lot of things decluttered including the kitchen pantry and the top shelf on my laundry closet. Hopefully this weekend I will get that project done. We have not had any "visitors" since so that encourages me that this was a very new problem!
This has been a very rough work week and so I have done small projects in the evening. The basket table that we have between our 2 chairs in the in the family room got decluttered and the baskets reorganized. :) Old magazines (yeah, more) from the baskets were decluttered. A crochet project was bagged and placed into my craft room to keep till ready to work on again. All remotes rearranged in top basket. Pens and other small items contained and decluttered in second basket. I threw out pens that did not work, replaced batteries in the flashlight that we keep there. :) Smaller projects but satisfying!!! Click here to find out what others are doing!!! What did you declutter today??

Blogging for Blood Cancers

What a great day to find this! My dad died November 9, 1987 of acute leukemia and today would have been his birthday! His father died at age 46 of some sort of blood disorder and when dad was diagnosed, we wondered if his dad had the same thing! Please read on and visit the websites involved!

RAISING AWARENESS - Why It Ultimately Is Better Than Just Raising Funds
As we hold the "Blogging for Blood Cancer" event, I urge you all to think about the real importance of awareness. Four years ago at this time, I was just learning about little Allie Scott and her battle with Leukemia. It is through Jenny and Allie’s battle that I learned of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and their incredible mission: "to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families." As I sat reading of Allie's battle, what could a mom in NJ do to help this little one?
* Could I walk 2 miles? Yes!
* Could I send an e-mail or letter to friends, coworkers, and family? Yes!!!
* Could literally every single dollar I and my Friends of Heroes team members raised make a difference? Yes, lots of dollars have added up to over $960,000.
* Would I have ever gotten involved if one single person, Jenny, had not made me aware? Absolutely not!!!!
I think that many of the people who have walked as part of Friends of Heroes (formerly Friends of Allie) over the past four years can say pretty much the same thing. I’ve come into contact with so many people who tell me they have heard of Allie and her story either directly from Jenny or through others sharing it.
I personally have been able to raise only about $5,000 during the four years I've walked. Believe me when I say I am not a big time fundraiser but by working on events like this and being involved in Friends of Heroes has allowed me to raise a significant amount of awareness that is worth way more the that $5,000.
As you participate in this blogging event, please remember how important raising awareness is and how easy it is to do something so important.
* Does it cost you anything? No. You can do it online or even get many of your supplies from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and/or your local chapter.
* Can you tell the story of an honored hero and share why this organization is so important? Who would not want to share these amazing children with others?
* Can you hand out a brochure or write a blog post? Can you tell others about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the importance of cancer research? Can you help get the word out to cancer patients of the services that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offers? Not too hard but ok it does take a little effort ;)
* Where can we do it? Anywhere from your front step to your local grocery store to a restaurant to a community fair to YOUR BLOG.
Please won't you help us raise awareness for this important cause?
My Dad

a href=" http://www.wearethatfamily.com/2008/04/sincerely-fro-me-to-you.html">

Today would have been my daddy's 96 birthday. He has been gone for nearly 21 years and I still miss his presence in my life. I was so blessed to have my dad. He was a wonderful dad! Now when I say that I want others that may not have the best memories of their parents, my dad was not perfect. No parent is or was, but he was the best parent he could be and I think he did a very good job of raising us kids! Proudly my dad is a Veteran of Foreign Wars. I don't remember this but I guess when I was about 2 my daddy was in a very serious car accident. A man turned left in front of him and dad nearly died. He was in the hospital for weeks and had one leg shattered. YEARS later, he was still picking bone slivers out of his leg. I guess that I missed him terribly while in the hospital and those were the days when children were not allowed in the hospital (unless they were the patient!) Dad worked as a district sales rep for International Shoes and was gone most of the week. When Dad came home I was ALWAYS so happy to see him. He could get away with asking me "Who's my best girl?" "I am Daddy, I am!" (I was the only daughter) I would sit on his lap and comb his hair. He was so patient letting me part his hair and carefully comb over the mole in the middle of his head! I used to love it when dad gave me a bath because when he dried me off. When dad was home, I would always want daddy to lay down night night with me. As I grew older, dad remained my hero. He was a very friendly man and he loved kids. When my friends came over, he always had a song to sing to them (didn't matter that dad couldn't sing! lol) He eventually went into business for himself in 1962 and my friends always enjoyed having him wait on them. He taught me very good customer service skills. "The customer is always right even when they are wrong!" And I remembered that as I waited on people in the shoe store where I worked for him in high school and until I got married. Dad was a wonderful grandpa. He was adored by all his 9 grandchildren. My children all have wonderful memories of time with grandpa and grandma. He had a very warm heart although not all might have known that. He was so crushed when my fourth child was still born. And with my "special angel", Dad had such great patience and love for her. I know that he would have done anything in his power to change things for her if he could have. The love was mutual as she loved her grandpa tremendously also. One thing I really respected about my dad was that he always stood behind what my mom said. If mom told me NO, I could not expect to go to dad and have him give in to me. He loved my mom very much. My biggest disappointment? Back in the 50s when "Annie Oakley" was at a bank in Lincoln, Nebraska one Sunday afternoon, meeting her fans. I was one of her BIGGEST fans! Dad was taking me to see her. But when we got there, the parking lot was
full and the crowd was out the door. We did not go in as Dad felt it was tooo crowded. I was so disappointed!!! I wanted to see her so badly. I don't remember throwing a tantrum or a fuss, but I may have! lol I realize today that I wouldn't want to go in either. I don't like big crowds either! After getting married and after dad "retired", he often would come up during the day and visit with me and the babies. I loved that. I don't remember any other friend that had their dad drop in to see them. My dad could always tell the most interesting stories from his past. I wish that I had encouraged him to write them down or tell them to me and I write them down. My dad was named after his father, who he respected highly, but we didn't find that out until after he passed away!! I miss my dad!!! He is reunited with my mom, his parents and his granson now and peaceful. I love you, daddy!!! Oh, by the way, the last pic? On Memorial Day 1967, I brought home a pound puppy, Tammy, without my parents permission. SURPRISE!!! Dad told me the minute that dog peed in the house, it was going. No sooner said that .... OOPS!!! Dad loved that dog till the day he died about 12 years later! ***** I should have Paul Peterson's "My Dad" Playing in the background to this one! LOL... only us oldies would remember that song!! *****

Once Upon A Time There Was A Retard….
Such is the tag line to a new, big budget, R-rated summer movie opening this week. “Tropic Thunder” is a comedy produced by DreamWorks/Paramount, and directed and written by Ben Stiller, who also stars in the movie.
The plot includes a group of pampered actors, lost in the jungle while making a war movie. Tugg Speedman, Ben Stiller’s character, is a fading action hero who missed his Oscar opportunity with his portrayal of Simple, a character with an intellectual disability. Speedman’s portrayal of Simple is a movie within the movie, “Simple Jack.”
Already “Tropic Thunder” has presented audiences with a new go to phrase, “Never Go Full Retard.”
And for much less than the cost of a session with one of my son’s therapists, you can purchase a t-shirt declaring to the world that you are a Full Retard.
Charming, no?
The term ‘retard’ is nothing short of hate speech. The word piles insult and even possible harm on a group of people who already find it hard, if not impossible, to integrate into a society that values perfection above all else.
Of course DreamWorks and Stiller are trying to deflect the idea that “Tropic Thunder” is anything more than a comic satire intended to put down actors, not persons with disabilities.
There will be those who will be entertained for an hour or so with “Tropic Thunder”. There will be those that find wearing a t-shirt shouting the words “Full Retard” hysterical. Like Stiller, they will express their disbelief at how the word retard could offend anyone.
![]()
Each person who makes the choice to go and see “Tropic Thunder” helps promote the idea that hurting others for the sake of a laugh is okay. I humbly submit that the world is cruel enough. The damage caused by “Tropic Thunder” will last much longer than the movie’s 90 minute viewing time.
The use of the word ‘retard’ is setting how society views those with intellectual disabilities back a generation. Recently the announcement of a new early method of pre-natal testing for fetal Down syndrome was made. This announcement was made with great fanfare and excitement. Because the earlier parents know their child may be born with an intellectual disability, the earlier and easier it becomes to terminate that pregnancy. I believe the connotations that go along with the word ‘retard’ play no small part in this kind of thinking.
At the very least, ‘Tropic Thunder’ will make it much easier to cross the line of verbal abuse so often expressed toward individuals with intellectual disabilities
Unfortunately the only way to get this message across to Mr. Stiller and friends is to wake them up where it matters most……their egos and pocketbooks. Refusing to see this movie will address both of those issues.
I hope you will be willing to stand up for kids like my son, Parker, and for all of the others who live life with an intellectual disability.
My son spends enough time fighting for his life. He shouldn’t have to fight for acceptance in this world as well.
Together we can make a difference.
Please refuse to see this movie and ask your family and friends to also boycott this film.

One of my major declutters
Ok. This is one of the embarrassing declutterings. I had been saving this project for next weekend but necessity made 1/2 of it happen this weekend. I have a closet off my laundry that I have for overflow bulk. Yesterday morning I went to get oatmeal out of that pantry. It was in one of the waxy cereal bags as it was from a big box from Costco that I purchased about 3 months ago. I cut open the top and dumped it into the tupperware container. Then I started to fold the bag to put in the garbage. A small hole caught my eye. And then a larger hole. I thought about it a moment and thought a trip back to the pantry that has an outside wall was in order. Yep, just as I suspected, an unwanted four legged creature had left it's droppings on the shelf. I don't think it has been around very long, but long enough to make me realize that all the food out there was going now and my plan to use this for the appliances and pots and pans that I don't use as often were going out there now, instead of later. Not a happy camper here. So the kitchen pantry is now rearranged and organized. The laundry closet is not yet. There are two traps laid out in hopes of catching that rascally varmit! Last night when I was in here posting, I heard one of the broom handles fall over in the closet... Got brave and went to check it out, knowing that the noise of the handle falling would scare him away.... more evidence that it had returned this time to find nothing of which would satisfy him. (I had cleaned out anything that was food related) I was fortunate this time. The oatmeal appeared to be the only thing it/they got into. Sigh. This is the joy of living close to woods. :) I didn't really enjoy dealing with this at the same time the grandkids were here but sometimes that is life. But at least one project that I had planned on doing is accomplished anyway. And if this doesn't make sense and is jumbled, it is because I have had about a trillion interruptions! (now does that exaggeration sound like I have been around the kids all weekend? LOL) And yes, that is baby food on the second shelf. I have an apricot jello recipe that we love that takes peach baby food. :)
day 10 - Declutter

I am taking a page out of Marcia's book today and getting rid of some purses! The bottom one is a black great organizing bag. It was my mom's. When she passed away 4 years ago, I brought it home, cleaned it out and there it has hung in my closet. Tried to get rid of several times. Sentiment. Today, ruthless... out! the other small black bag is a small organizing bag, TOO small. OUT. The red bag I used one time for an office Christmas party. That has been at least 6 years ago. BYE BYE! *They are in the box for goodwill.
Another special day!

Today is my son in law's 40th birthday. He is husband to my oldest daughter and father to four of my granddaughters. I am so blessed to have Jon in my life. When Jon first started dating my daughter, you know, we always want to make sure they are worthy of our treasured loved ones. It wasn't long before he was endeared in my heart. When Jon would come in and wait for his wife to be, often I would find his lanky 6'6" frame planted in the middle of the living room, talking with our special angel, letting her hug him and giggle. She has a sixth sense about people and Jon passed her test with flying colors. Who was I to doubt?? Jon is a godly husband and father. He is truly a blessing to my daughter and so very supportive of her as a wife and mother. His girls adore him as do all my grandchildren. Another blessing in my life!

Pork Chops with Apples and Stuffing

This is a Taste of Home Recipe and one of my favorites. (found some apple pie filling in the cupboard made me think of this)
Pork Chops with Apples and Stuffing
- 6 boneless pork loin chops (1 inch thick)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 package (6 ounces) crushed stuffing mix
- 1 can (21 ounces) apple pie filling with cinnamon (I add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the filling - this is critical - not as good if no cinnamon!)
Directions:
In a large skillet, brown pork chops in oil over medium-high heat. Meanwhile, prepare stuffing according to package directions. Spread pie filling into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Place the pork chops on top; spoon stuffing over chops.Cover and bake at 350° for 35 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 minutes longer or until a meat thermometer reads 160°. Yield: 6 servings.
Thank you, Marcia, Organising Queen!

Imagine my surprise and delight when I hopped over to give the Organising Queen a visit this afternoon and found out I had won the Household Organising planner! This fits in right in with my projects for this month! Thank you, Marcia. And if there are others hesitating to take the challenge let this be an encouragement to YOU! Along with being able to win something valuable to help you in your decluttering journey, you will find helpful hints, develop new friendships and get encouragement and give encouragement from others! I am not only enjoying my accomplishments, but I am enjoying seeing what others are finding to declutter no matter how small or how big! Thanks again, Marcia for the gift but most of all thank you for a challenge that has encouraged us and helped us to take small steps to organizational success!
Paper shopping bags
My granddaughter asked me why I was taking pictures of "stuff." Actually my husband asked me the same question the other night when I took pics of my breakfast nook table. This is a bunch of Harley shopping bags. I love them. I have used them but I am going to be honest, I have had this particular bunch in my laundry room pantry since we moved in here in December of 04 and I have not used them ONCE. With the evidence of a little critter in this closet, they are gone! Out of here by way of the recycling paper!!
They are multiplying!
The numbers seem to be growing around here! I am TRYING to get thru my project but good luck with that one. I am just about ready to abandoned it for the day and play some Golf (cards) with the kids. After the kids go home, I plan to take some of these pictures and make a paper sack mini album for them of their time spent with grammy and Papa Doug.
